Deoksoon Kim, Ph.D.

Professor at the Lynch School of Education and Human Development, Boston College. My research focuses on understanding the needs of immigrant students to facilitate English acquisition and academic success through instructional technology.

DK English School’s curriculum is organized around four pillars that prepare students to read, write, and converse fluently in a world reshaped by AI. Each pillar draws on Dr. Kim’s research in language acquisition, multimodal storytelling, and formative education.

Foundations: Academic English for the AI Era

Reading comprehension, vocabulary depth, and grammar fluency — taught with attention to how AI tools both accelerate and reshape language learning. Students learn to use English well and to use AI responsibly as a collaborator rather than a substitute.

Voice & Identity through Multimodal Storytelling

Drawing on research in digital storytelling, students compose across modes — text, image, audio, video — to develop a clear voice and a sense of who they are becoming as English speakers. Bilingual identity is treated as an asset, not a hurdle.

Critical Engagement with AI

Programs that teach students to interrogate, prompt, and evaluate generative AI outputs. Students learn fact-checking, source evaluation, and rhetorical analysis in an AI-saturated information environment — preparing them for academic settings where AI is a baseline tool, not an exception.

Conversation, Pronunciation & Real-World Fluency

Live, low-stakes speaking practice with both human teachers and AI conversation partners. Pronunciation coaching, idiom acquisition, and confidence-building for academic, professional, and creative contexts.
